Adwaita was a tortoise born in 1750 (26 years before The United States became a country) and died at the ripe old age of 255 on March 23rd, 2006. Historical records show that he was once the pet of General Robert Clive of the British East India Company. He spent several years at his estate before being given to the Alipore Zoo in 1875. There he spent the remainder of his life until a crack on his shell led to an infection and later passed away from liver failure. Adwaita is believed to be the oldest tortoise in history – beating other long-lived tortoises by more than 60 years.
