The Man Behind AOL’s “You’ve Got Mail” Voice

Elwood Edwards is a voice actor that you’ve probably never heard of. However, there’s a really good chance that you have heard him. He’s the voice behind the famous sound clips “You’ve Got Mail”, “Welcome”, and many others from America Online.

At its peak, America Online had 30 million members worldwide, all logging on everyday and waiting to hear Elwood’s friendly voice notifying them that they had messages in their inbox. If you used the internet in the 90′s or still use AOL mail today, it’s a voice you are very familiar with. The voice became so prevalent in popular culture it spurred the 1998 movie “You’ve Got Mail” starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. It even got Mr. Edwards a role on an episode of The Simpsons where he played a virtual doctor announcing “You’ve got leprosy”.
