Farming in West Oakland
Eric Maundu has created a fascinating "aquaponics" system in West Oakland where he is able to farm without the use of soil. The plants get their nutrients from fish by-product instead. The by-product is toxic to the fish, but the plants filter it out as clean water and then it is pumped back into the tank. This cycle continues over and over allowing him to simultaneously farm plants and fish in a symbiotic relationship.
